I have been thinking, “What is the difference between Astronomy and Astrology ? Actually it comes to mind that Astrology is not the correct translation of  ज्योतिर्विज्ञानम्

मन्येऽहं यत् खगोलविज्ञानम् तु ज्योतिर्विज्ञानस्य मूलम् | I think astronomy is the basic scientific base of ज्योतिर्विज्ञानम्. Rather if one should think that there are two broad divisions of ज्योतिर्विज्ञानम्, then astronomy or खगोलविज्ञानम् is the first division and astrology is the second division.

In Astronomy one does study

  1. के ग्रहाः सूर्यमालिकायाम् – the planets in the solar system
  2. काः राशयः – the zodiacal signs
  3. कानि नक्षत्राणि – what are the constellations
  4. भूगोलस्य कस्मिन् स्थाने कस्मिन् समये के ग्रहाः, काः राशयः, कानि नक्षत्राणि, दृश्यमाणानि आकाशे – which planets, constellations and zodiacal signs can be sighted in the sky from a given place on earth at a given time. Rather, instead of saying “can be sighted”, it would be more appropriate to say, “would be visible and/or present in the visible part of the sky”.
When do eclipses happen ?
How do eclipses happen ?
    2. कुत्र कुत्र दृश्यन्ते वा न दृश्यन्ते तानि ? from which places on earth can the eclipses be seen
How in what form or pattern would the eclipses be seen, partial or complete ?

एतत् खगोलविज्ञानमेव मूलम् मत्त्वा के प्रभावाः एतेषां सर्वेषां ज्योतीनां प्राणिमात्राणां जीवने एतद्विधः अभ्यासः ज्योतिर्विज्ञानस्य अन्यः विचारः | अतः ज्योतिर्विज्ञानं ज्ञातुं खगोलविज्ञानस्य अभ्यासः अत्यावश्यकः | Considering these astronomical details, in the second division of ज्योतिर्विज्ञानम्, one would study the effect of astronomical aspects on the living beings. This is the astrological aspect.

Some may question the validity of such effect or influence. They would first argue, the planets and constellations are so far away from the earth. How can they influence living beings on earth ?

However one should bear in mind that all planets of the solar system rotate and revolve without any support anywhere, just floating in the space. Astrological masters contend that rays of the sun are akin to its arms. It is with these arms that the sun provides the hold on all planets, that too in such manner that there is hold, yet the planets can rotate and revolve. If this is right, all planets and constellations can as well be exercising an influence on living beings on earth.

प्राणिमात्राणां जीवने सर्वेषां ज्योतीनां प्रभावः कथं कथं भवति एतद्विषये ज्योतिर्विद्भिः कतिपयानि अनुमानान्यपि सिद्धानि | तेषामभ्यसनेन प्रायः योतिर्विज्जानाति किं किं भूतं भूतकाले, किं चलति वर्तमानकाले, किं किं भवेत् भविष्यत्काले इति | सः त्रिकालज्ञानी भवति | Astrological masters have also derived conclusions (sort of patterns of probability of the effects or influences of the planets and constellations. An astrological master who can apply these deductions would read events in the past, the present and the future. He has the ability to read across all the expanse of Time, the fourth dimension

एतावत्सु ज्योतिर्वित्सु प्रायः भृगुमहर्षिः बहुमतः | दृश्यतां श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतायाः दशमे अध्याये उक्तं भगवता महर्षीणां भृगुरहमिति | भृगुसंहिता तु ज्योतिर्विद्भ्यः महत्त्वपूर्णः ग्रन्थः | Among such Astrological masters, भृगुमहर्षिः seems to be the most eminent. In Tenth chapter of gItA, Bhagawan as the doyen among Rishis, Krishna connotes himself to be bhRugu-maharshi, भृगुसंहिता attributed to भृगुमहर्षिः is the most valuable reference work for all students of astronomy and astrology.
